After a long and grueling week of dog-sitting the editor and I have kicked Joe to the curb, never to return!

[editor's notes: not entirely true, Joe's family came to get him.

Woo was actually a kind hostess and carried all the toys you see scattered about to Joe and dropped them in front of him. Then if he ever did show a preference for one she promptly took it back... oh well. ]

Gracie's Day

Today we're thinking about Grace, the good old dog who taught me all about family.

She was always happy to see me even if lately she couldn't play anymore.

She welcomed all family pets

and took care of them just as she did her people.

Grace was Grandma Anne's dog (the editor's mom),

but the kids were her kids,

raised from kindergarten through college,

she would always intervene if anyone came too close to them.

"Go find Hanna," was probably her favorite command.

and Ben's bed was a favorite spot lately.

Summer Break

Hi all!

It has been more than a month, and I can't wait to stop by all of your blogs very soon, but I thought I'd update you all while I can get the editor to type.

It is finally summer here, after many false starts and much rain I headed out to see how the water lilies were coming along. The editor came along and was still attached while . . .

I really went for it. she kept shouting, "leash!" but whatever, I don't know why she didn't want to go swimming too, there are fish in there!

This is the last pic before we had a mad scrabble to take off my collar and the editor got to practice her balance skills.

Do you guys all like to swim? previously I would only go this deep in the pool in a quest to chase my editor when she's already swimming. This was a big surprise for all.

Nothin' growing in or on me-- including me, my last three vet visits (over 18 months) my weight has fluctuated less than 1/2 a pound! I am packing a petite 45.6 pound punch.

Nature Walk

So the other day after too much driving the edior pulled over at the side of the road (not randomly, but unexpectedly in the middle of nature preserve land) and said, "that's it, we are going for a walk." I was of course totally up for it.

C'mon!

There were lots of waterfowl nearby, but the editor is a crap nature photographer. Every few minutes a pair of heron would swoop up all big and circle us before settling down again. You think one picture would have made it, but apparently no. (eds. note - those things are large! when it finally did appear in the viewfinder I was too startled and kept ducking like it was going to flap at me :P Here's a nice sitting one.)

I told the leurdales their pinkies did fine with the parrot pics compared to this. Maybe we'll try again sometime.

So it was a refreshing way to break the mid-day and after about an hour we were able to

carry on.

Hey pupps! Woo dog here. I'm frightfully busy, but I wanted to share a few before and afters from this past week with you.

First up is me, check out the new spring look. Elapsed time: 2 days.

Next is a rare pic of Hanna after a grooming. While spring is enough of a reason for me to clean up, she had to wait for something called prom.

Editor here, after weeks of fitful sleeping and trying to block out the noise created by two sworn enemies I gave up and left them to it. I locked them both out of my room and put in some earplugs and well, after a few days they seem to be fine, but I made one of those "pet owner" caves I'd sworn against.

Yes, that is a picture of my cat in her bed on top of my dining room table. So its kind of ick, but at least I can pull off the table cloth and cover when I want to use it..., right?

Winn seems to be taking it in stride. She doesn't have too much trouble with her sleep. I think she's been practicing in her "daybed" as I had to remove a kong from my pillow when I got home from work.

I can't believe this is what it has come to. I look at the last picture and I think I should try and find my own apartment.

The Problem, Part II

To recap, we live with a cat named Libbs and I sleep on the floor in the editor's bedroom. The editor loves the cat and I love my sleeping arrangements. However some weeks ago I decided that I would rather chase the cat at night than go to sleep. Formerly this was not a problem and I didn't even need to be shut in, but one day I seem to have cracked.

So now the aged cat is very careful about where she will go at night. Formerly she would always come when called (really, she fetches too) and she shared the big bed. Now she sleeps fitfully around the house and I jump around whenever she moves.

So, I was relegated to the crate, where I whine furiously and lick fretfully. The crate even has rust spots from my compulsive licking.

I was left to sleep in the white room, aka Hanna's room when she visits. I gutted that duvet and spread down and feathers throughout the house. [Editor's note: I am still finding feathers a month later]

I was left in the hall to guard the house and the cat was locked in the big bedroom. I ran from upstairs to downstairs and downstairs to upstairs and barked at noises with no regard for the hour. The cat had enough by about 3am and even she decided to start pawing the doors for escape. This is also difficult because it requires the cat to come when called and me to not chase her at bedtime and she is still pretty wary about that.

So now I'm allowed back in my playpen (I will drag my blanket and bed back in there if the editor attempts to move them elsewhere.) but the cat is in hiding at night.

I will back off and not chase the cat if a shaker can is employed (ie an empty can of diet coke filled with pennies and duct taped shut that is shaken to startle and cower, really scary) but this is not a reasonable long term solution. Don't worry I don't hurt her, I just like to lick and snuffle her ample belly. She doesn't like it though.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to let us go back to peaceful slumber it would be much appreciated. The vet and trainers were unhelpful and just said as long as the cat can escape and no one gets hurt this is all we can expect. I say we are tired!

The Problem, Part I

Did you know we also live with a cat?

Yep, this is Libbs. She's 12 and has lived with the editor since undergrad days in NYC. She was a stray, has two tattoos and really, really likes burritos.

Libby has put up with multiple moves, dogs and boyfriends.

This is my bed. I've slept in my playpen for nearly two years now. It is where I go to recharge during the day and usually stumble into at night. I was never a big fan of my crate and as it wasn't a problem I was allowed to continue. I'm well taller than my playpen, and have been for more than a year. I never left its comfortable confines though, except once when I was about 8 weeks old and the cute toddling of a visiting tiny human was too much to resist so then I climbed right over in about three seconds.

So you might be able to put 2 and 2 together and figure out what the problem is. Suffice it to say none of us has had a decent night's sleep in about 6 weeks. Next chance we get we'll go through some of the attempts taken to resolve the problem. if you have any thoughts or suggestions please let us know. Seriously, we're tired.

This weekend I tried to take pictures of us together. These images are the results of nearly ten minutes of wrangling. Mainly because lately amongst some other nondesirable behavior (i'm sure future rants to come) Woo thinks she is a lapdog.

I think it is hilarious that later looking over the resulting pictures I realized that in general she and I have the same expression at the same time throughout.

Just because I've been hibernating,

Yesterday was part of a weekend above 10 degrees F (-12 C)

So the editor and I took a walk in her grandparent's back yard.

The snow was awfully deep. We've never had less than 2' on the ground since christmas.

but she forgot the camera.

and so had to use her phone, which means special gloves, which are not warm.

so we ran all the way home!

Last edition the editor's poor captioning and photo abilities took away my deserved credit; the picture of me squinting at the camera flash is notable not only for my cute face but for the biscuit on my head. that's right dogs, on.my.head. This feat is much more difficult than the old balancing on my paws, and while it might not qualify me for a japanese game show, it is the noble skill of Chuck, dog companion to what might as well just be known as the most infamous blogger like ever, dooce.

PS.

I'm happy to report my catch is coming along nicely and I caught popcorns yesterday. They float for evers in the air and the editor couldn't possibly squeak any higher so I figured I might as well try and placate her a little. Also we were guests and her behavior is embarrassing in public.

I'm not embarrassed to tell you, I'm a world class fetcher, if you throw it, I will return it to you. If it squeaks, I might even do it in a timely fashion.

But this "catch" thing? Not so much. And just because you say the word, "catch" that does not make it a game to throw things at my head. but I am a lovable Woo and so I've been practicing- in the house because it is COLD outside. Also because West Wing is on, clearly.

yay! Look I got one!

Have you mastered the art of Catch? Have any tips to share? [editor's note: We tried food based catch, but that is particularly pitiful. She lets it (marshmallow, liver treat, cheese) hit her then eats it after. its kind of embarrassing. ]

btw- not only have I been behind on blogging, but the editor just put away the holiday decorations last weekend. how sad is that? bye bye for another year my squeaky stocking. . .

oh my dogs, I can't believe it has been so long since I've talked to you all. No, I was not killt because of my seasonal redecoration of the white carpet, but it has been a busy six weeks.

First was Halloween. The editor was a little nervous, but I loved it. I was able to wear some thing called, "oh so pretty hot dog," and I got much attention, what's not to love? then the best thing ever...kids! and they all came right up to my house.

Then I got to go to a party called voting.

Then the editor left me and I stayed with Grace

Then she came back.

Then she left me again and I stayed with Trina

Finally she came back again and we had Thanksgivemeyourturkey. I greeted all guests in a boisterous manner and did not rest until I had snuffled their ears but good. Then came a boring bit where all the people sat up in the dining room for a while and then after... turkey!

Then is leave me alone I is sleepy.

Letter from the Editor: Lowered Expectations

Woo is my first puppy on my own. I did some research on how to

prepare for her in the weeks leading up to bringing her home.

Below is just one of the books I bought, plus the 6 or so from the library.

Previous puppy experience was strictly limited to play, and

apparently formal portraits. Here's me aged 9 or so with

"Misha Mon Amie" our min schnauzer. (like Scottie!)

then came Iver Puppy (aka Starr's Ivy of Joy) seen

here with a much younger Libbs. (aka the cat that set up Woo)

anyway, I was not in any way responsible for either of these animal's

discipline, but I was planning on taking a hard line with Woo and as

all dog parents in my puppy kindergarten and obedience class knew

I would not settle for second best in class.

Somewhere along the line however these standards have slipped...

Indeed Woo has made it onto the big bed. aka her daybed, like Bogart,

though she retires to her own at night.

and you'll be happy to hear that she is alive and well after the

incident documented below:

yes, that is a path of muddy paw prints. Leading from the back door through the entryway, into the kitchen, hallway, living room and into the sunroom where she proudly greeted me after successfully opening the backdoor. That's right. She did not take to the polite sit and bark routine I was putting her through and continued to work at the knob until she now KNOWS HOW TO OPEN the small round handled door knob

when it is unlocked. Thankfully she doesn't own a hair pin.

Also thankful I developed a sense of airedale humor because she of course did not follow the same path back to the entry way to be cleaned off but decided to walk through the dining room too, but she was oh so proud and happy to see me and again demonstrate her new ability the next time I tried to leave her alone FOR TWO MINUTES.

Max is a Palooza!

So I posted bail and hit the road, but so much has been happening even at home lately, the most important thing is my first ever birthday! The editor always snuck a peak to find out what her presents were, so here she's letting me check out mine.

In progress, my very own new lawn. All nice and level and blended into the backyard.

Too bad I'm not yet let anywhere near it. On the other hand maybe its a good thing, there are some water throwing monsters out there too.

I'm a palooza, obvs-- a "remarkable or wonderful person or thing." The world is full of other paloozas too, something about music and etymology, but this is a dog blog, pups, and so let me tell you about aterrier.

Aterrier is a brilliant blog all about terriers in pop culture. The gorgeous, clean journalist wordpress template is particularly appropriate for this well sourced and editorial free space where I've learned all about literary terriers, fashion terriers, terriers in cinema and history-- that's just this month. If I were a human I would want to write a blog just like this one.

So, I let her have one. Mmm. minty goodness. Look at that happiness, she had to close her eyes to concentrate on the mélange of flavors.

next up, taste test challenge #1, Woo's favorite dried chicken bit vs a Torri's Tasty Original.

She knows whatever she picks it will be a winner. I made equal size portions and laid them out.

No contest! straight for Torri's!

We repeated the experiment a few times to ensure accuracy and to control all variables of placement. The Veggie & Cheese Terrier Tea Cakes were the clear winner in taste while the mint won for smell, but it was a bit messy.

Before we could conduct blind trials the rest of the sample disappeared somehow.

I am embarrassed to admit the rumors are true. Diagnosis: viral papilloma, warts. Jeanne and the desert dales called it. [Editor's note: While the vet loves and recommends the care they get at winnie's daycare, she also did not hesitate in sighting it as the cause. No more daycare for about a month, by then she should be wart and infection free, with a boosted immunity to the virus.]

Woo's a little pre-occupied with a nap currently, but I thought I'd update her nose condition, which is namely, the same. She doesn't seem to have any other symptoms and even went to play today for a few hours as the vet had no reservations with it. There were 3 airegirls at daycare, I was all excited, but I just missed the other two. I was surprised to hear one was even smaller than woo's 21 inches.

When I picked her up the two of us visited the petstore with open bins nearby, she took advantage of my talking to other shoppers, helped herself to a few milk bones and walked a bully stick to the register. Those dog level bins are surely a racket.

Big Dog Boutique made the fetching custom collar that I wear daily. No easy customer me, I needed:

-a martingale or no-slip collar because of that time I pulled a houdini and backed out of my collar in excitement to greet and jump on the 93 year-old neighbor who still does her own gardening (hi Ida Marie!)

-my boomerang dog name tag permanently attached because of the time the dangly tag's ring snagged and ripped open a finger (hi Gma AM!)

-a size between medium and large

-a styling look that I could rock all the time

Big Dog Boutique not only let me choose the custom size, color, style and hardware options, but let me mail them my name tag to secure it, and kept me updated on the production and shipment. Nice Pups, huh?

I have some sort of pustules on my nose. They've been there since Friday. The vet says to just watch them for changes and maybe I should come in next week. The editor says there should be support groups for panicked first time puppy owners over weekends and holidays. Vet's diagnosis viral papillomas or warts.

Doing my Part in the Garden

At the beginning of the season I thought it was important to check up on the bulbs, measure their growth, progress and scent.

This one eventually grew larger than my head! Not so good scent, though.Now that my yard is boring I've widened my scope, and make it my mission to pick up any stray bottle for the neighbors. This was yesterday's bottle. I carried it four blocks home.

Then it was snatched mercilessly from my jaws. I had plans for that bottle...big plans.

Really, this, what I'm doing here, yeah, that's right, white stuff is coming. Yes, I know its been hot and humid. Not to mention mid-June.

Weekend Recap

On the road this weekend. First, to attend Yappy Hour at Fort Hyde, for big dogs only! I raced around the agility field with an english bulldog, german shepard, burmese mountain dog, great dane, lots of boxers and more. We got so warm that when a smart chocolate lab found a nice shady spot we had a great big dog pile under the tree.
Afterwards we cooled off at Udder Delights where the ice cream is delicious, homemade and they know that a dog deserves it's own bowl for free. I was so tired after all this romping that I pretty much slept through both features at the drive-in.

Sunday we went park romping with my editor's father. Working up an appetite, I got to go to my very first restaurant. I rejected any kibble offerings (what the heck? that wasn't on the menu) but in general behaved well.

Capped off the night at my friend Joey's for a party, where a magical thing happened. I found a bone bigger than me! [Editor's Note: not much of an exaggeration] I tried my best but could not eat the whole thing. Joey's person Nick is leaving for 3 months in Texas, good luck Nick!

my first ever post! I've been hearing all about the fun some dogs have been having with their blogs, and never one to be left out, my nose is here snuffling into all the action
so from now on I hope to get my editor to take it all down. My highs and lows; starting this week and including some memories from my first few months. Stay tuned.
